In 2017 Le Havre celebrates the 500th anniversary of both the city and the port. The main events will take place between April and September but it will be an all-year celebration.

“The idea is to give visibility to Le Havre worldwide. As the city was destroyed during World War 2 we want to elevate its standing and also to elevate the attraction of the region,” explained Valerie Conan, cruise director Le Havre Tourist Office.

The entire area by Quai de Southampton will be renovated and integrated into the city centre to improve the connection between port and city. There will also be some renovations in the city as well as some new buildings for the anniversary which will remain.

Conan has been in touch with cruiselines re making calls which have requested an anniversary events programme by the fall this year. Calls in 2015 number 100 with 120 already booked in 2016 which includes AIDAprima. This year Princess Cruises has a call coinciding with the Tour de France passing through the city on July 9. There are more than 22% repeat passengers to Le Havre. “We want to promote Le Havre as a turnaround port especially for French passengers,” Conan added.
