The Port of Kalundborg has entered into partnership with Blue Water Shipping and PWL Port Services to introduce the Danish port as the new gateway to the Baltics, catering to large cruiseships with easy access to Copenhagen Airport as well as the city itself. The partners will be responsible for the terminal operation as well as acquisition.

The construction of a 330,000m2 port area will be completed in February 2019. About 25,000m2 will be designated for cruise operations to facilitate turnarounds for the largest vessels in the industry. A 500m-long quay with a depth of 15m will be available.

"The Port of Kalundborg has its eyes on the future cruise market. The growth within the cruise industry is immense and the potential for new business huge," says port director Bent Rasmussen.

"We are confident that with this new port area we are offering a unique turnaround opportunity for Baltic cruises and journeys along the Norwegian coast. The location of Kalundborg 8nm from the T-route in the Great Belt and just 100 km from Copenhagen airport will make Kalundborg a very competitive alternative in the area with regard to revenue for the cruiselines and time and fuel savings when cruising into the Baltic," says Liselotte Roerup, cruise and marketing manager, Port of Kalundborg.

Meanwhile Alexander Napp, managing partner PWL Port Services: "When we came across the Port of Kalundborg and its potential once the new deepwater pier is in place, it was only a consequent step to join the team with Port of Kalundborg and Blue Water. With the expertise we have in Germany and the location of Kalundborg and its close proximity to Copenhagen we see a huge opportunity for the region."

Blue Water Shipping “is very excited to be part of the project” according to Hans Chen Braas, manager Port Agency & Cruise, who says: "The whole region is becoming increasingly popular and with the huge orderbook ahead, Kalundborg is a great alternative and addition to the existing port structure. Together with the Port of Kalundborg and PWL, we will be able to offer a modern, full-scale turnaround solution, customised to fit each cruise lines' exact needs.”
