The owners of IJmuiden Port have awarded the contract to dredge out the entrace to its IJmond harbour to Dutch company, De Vries & van der Wiel.
Dredging began on April 16 and is due for completion April 19.
As a result the current underwater obstruction partly blocking the entrance to the harbour will be removed, opening up the basin to vessels up to 300m in length.
“This will grant the possibility for larger vessels to call upon the greater Amsterdam region, when time saving is an issue,” says Frans Baud, managing director Felison Terminal.
“Due to this extension, we are contemplating the build of a semi-permanent structure at our Felison terminal number 3 berth, in the IJmond harbour, to handle the additional passengers,” he adds.
This year there will be 18 transit calls, two of which are overnight, and seven turnaround calls at the Dutch port.
