Hardangerfjord’s waterfalls get a makeover

Four waterfalls mark the entrances to the Hardanger area - Voringfoss, Skjervsfoss, Latefoss and Steinsdalsfoss - and all feature on shore excursions.

These four are now subject to work by the National Scenic Roads of Norway. Steinsdalsfoss was completed this summer whereby the 300,000 annual visitors can now walk under and behind it. Work on Voringfoss in Eidfjord starts next year and will be completed in 2017 with the remaining two following on.

The works include better access, new rails, information buildings, view platforms and parking spaces.

While anyone of any age can visit the falls, Hardangerfjord has come up with a couple of parent-free excursions. The first is for those between 10 and 14. It includes mountain climbing and abseiling, making Viking bread on a campfire, panoramic movie and visiting the Naturecenter at Eidfjord.

The second is aimed at 15 to 18 year olds and includes some of the above as well as a 3km bike ride and a whitewater jump into the Veig river.
