The 2016 cruise season in Hamburg will be the busiest on record with 700,000 passengers scheduled to visit the city, representing a growth of 35%. The city expects to welcome 170 cruiseships of which 151 will be homeporting and 19 on transit calls.

Hamburg has committed itself to become one of the most attractive and environmentally-friendly cruiseship locations in Europe. Today Cruise Gate Hamburg (CGH) offers alternative power solution at its three terminals: low emission LNG via the power barge in Hafencity; shorepower in Altona and LNG via truck at the cruise terminal Steinwerder.

The recently inaugurated new landside power plant is unique on the continent, according to Sacha Rougier, managing director CGH. The system is suitable for all common onboard systems and vessel sizes which means it is able to convert to the frequency of American and European standards.

CGH is fully supportive of Hamburg Port Authority which is lead partner in Green Cruise Port (GCP) project. Hamburg Cruise Center is one of the partners. In late September the first GCP conference took place in the city.

Port authorities, cruiselines, cruise associations, NGOs as well as policy stakeholders discussed future needs and challenges to encourage investments in environmentally-friendly cruise port infra- and super-structure as well as in better, smart traffic links to the public transport and supply systems.

In the coming three years the project, funded by EU Interreg Baltic Sea Region (BSR), will work on the development of smart solutions for ‘greener’ cruise ports in the Baltic Sea and the neighbouring North Sea regions.

The E2.8m project embraces all the BSR countries and includes also the ports of Rostock, Riga, Tallinn, Klaipeda, Helsinki, Bergen and Esbjerg and the Maritime Institute in Gdansk as partners. Associated organisations include the ports of Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen Malmo, Amsterdam, Gothenburg as well as AIDA and TUI Cruises.

Green Cruise Port aims to put in place a multi-dimensional strategic approach for a sustainable and qualitative future development for cruiseshipping in port areas, the BSR GCP Action Plan 2030.
