Gdynia provides waste disposal facilities whilst considering berth development and LNG supply

The Port of Gdynia is the only Polish port capable of accepting cruise vessels over 250m in length, according to Adam Hoppe, specialist, marketing and port development at the port. “Draught and breadth is also not a problem and [are] what makes our port very safe and easy to enter.” In most cases the larger vessels do not need to use tug assistance while entering/departing from the port.

The Francuskie berth, which is in good condition and does not need renovation, is presently used for cruise vessels. This year there the port hosted 41 calls and 88,616 passengers. Next year 53 calls are scheduled.

The port is in the process of amending its infrastructure to enable black and grey water sewage collection. This will also be available at Francuskie berth, at a capacity of 200 m3 an hour. This will be operational by May 31 2019. Documentation is now being prepared. Investment is estimated at PLN22m (€5.23m). The intention is to apply for EU co-funding.

In terms of LNG, the port has completed a feasibility study into supplying LNG. “We’ve initiated a working group on a governmental level to create regulations and guidelines for the use of LNG fuel in Polish ports and we are talking to LNG suppliers regarding possible bunkering,” explained Hoppe.

When it comes to accommodating ships, the port is looking to extend its offering. Hoppe commented: “The Port of Gdynia is looking for an additional berth to accommodate cruise vessels. We are checking possibilities to use one of the existing berths after renovation. Building a new berth is also under consideration, but it must go in line with the general port expansion. This will mean vast investment and definitely need more time to develop.”

The port has already started preparations to build new berths outside the breakwater in order to develop its cargo-handling capacity. Together with municipal investments, this opens up cruiseship berth possibilities.
