Gdynia is in the middle of modernising the Pomorskie Quay which is close to the city centre, according to Grgegorz Bonk, marketing Port of Gdynia Authority.
The main investment will include the deepening and modernisation of a 625m section of the quay as well as reconstruction of the quay infrastructure.
As far as cruiseships are concerned, there is a 239m section of the quay available for smaller vessels (length 200m and draught 6.8m). There are plans to increase the depth of the quay to 9m but the dredging has yet to be scheduled.
Berthing conditions, however, will be improved by June. New bollards, including three storm bollards, new fenders and a wider quay are all underway.
There are two other berths available for, but not exclusive to, cruisehips. The maximum size of vessel that can come alongside is 312m long and 12.5m draught and this is at the Francuski Quay. The turning basin has a diameter of 500m. Waste water can be collected by truck and there are recycling facilities outside the port.
Calls to the Polish port this year number 87 carrying about 130,000 passengers with newcomers to the port including Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines’ Balmoral and Iberocruceros’ Grand Mistral. In 2009 there were more and smaller ships, 96 calls and 134,895 passengers.
