Environmental exhibition aboard the cruise ship AIDAblu

Submitted by Stockholm on 3 June 2010 - 10:09am

On Friday 21 May 2010 Ports of Stockholm, Viking Line and the cruise shipping company AIDA Cruises held a much appreciated special exhibition on the theme of environmental strategies. The exhibition was held aboard the cruise ship AIDAblu at Stadsgården in Stockholm. The respective stakeholders presented their environmental efforts and conducted an open dialogue on current environmental issues.

The environmental systems aboard cruise ships are becoming increasingly advanced and consideration for the environment is of the highest priority both for the shipping companies and the ports. New methods to reduce environmental impact are under continuous development. Ports of Stockholm is working closely with the shipping companies to make it easier for vessels to be environmentally friendly when in port.

The shipping companies stressed the importance of the Baltic ports establishing a sufficient infrastructure to be able to cope with the increasingly green ambitions of the vessels in areas such as the sorting of waste and the offloading and management of black and grey water. Ports of Stockholm received praise for continuously being a step ahead on the issue of managing the waste generated by cruise ships. The discussion and the demands of the shipping companies demonstrate that international cooperation is essential to solve the environmental problems of the Baltic Sea. Ports of Stockholm initiates and participates in a large number of international environmental projects, such as the agreement with the Port of Helsinki that was signed last year.

Following the discussion, those in attendance were given a special guided tour of the vessel’s environmental facilities. This is the second consecutive year Ports of Stockholm has taken the initiative to provide this opportunity to discuss and more tangibly demonstrate the ongoing environmental efforts of shipping and the shipping companies.
