In October 2014 planning permission was submitted for a E200m infrastructure development by Dublin Port Company (DPC) which will be funded by its own resources.

The plan is to cut a piece off the existing quay in order to create a turning basin which would allow for a 330m-long cruiseship to come in. A decision has been made not to build a terminal as it does not make economic sense, according to Pat Ward, head of corporate services, DPC. However the land is available and the port is willing to work with a developer if one was interested in pursuing the project.

This year 150,000 cruise and 1.7m ferry passengers are expected. The city centre is easily accessible from the port on foot and flights from Dublin airport which is 12km away.

Dublin will host the Cruise Europe conference next year with dates yet to be confirmed.
