Discover IJmuiden by bicycle

There is no happier cyclist than a Dutch cyclist. This is not only because the Netherlands is mainly flat, but also because the Dutch enjoy the most extensive cycle network in the world. This small country has over 25,000 miles of high quality traffic free cycle routes and on many occasions cyclists have priority over motorized traffic. This is a cyclist’s paradise…..

Below we selected a few routes in the IJmuiden region. More options can be found on http://www.vvvijmuidenaanzee.nl/en/fietsen

Spaarnwoude Loop (18km)
Along this marked cycle route, you’ll pass through a treasure trove of nature, through villages, over snaking streams and across the peat meadows where farm animals such as Scottish Highland cattle roam the land. The route begins at the Zorgvrij Informatie Boerderij. Simply follow the blue markers along the path.

"Tour des Forts" bicycle route (22km Cycling along the Velsen defences.)
The Municipality of Velsen is home to the remnants of many military defences. Perhaps the most famous of these are the ruins of Brederode, although the Second World War defences are also prominent in the area. And although hidden from view, there are also the remains of two Roman Forts.

Historic Culture Route
This cycling route takes you through IJmuiden, Driehuis, Santpoort-Noord and Oud-Velsen. Making use of well-maintained, accessible cycle paths and roads, it’s a perfect opportunity to experience the open landscape and the towns along the way.

Cycling ‘Water Route’ (16km)
A dedicated tour for fans of water and landscape, this cycling route takes you past memorable examples of historic water management projects in the Velsen region, with an optional diversion into the harbour area, the lighthouses and beach. You can also experience a fantastic view of the locks at IJmuiden harbour.

Cornelis Vreeswijk Cycling Route
This pleasingly varied tour takes you through several characteristic spots in IJmuiden that influenced the young Kees Vreeswijk – who went on to become the renowned troubadour Cornelis Vreeswijk, living and working in Sweden until his death in 1987. Take the tour and enjoy some of the IJmuiden sights that the young boy would have experienced in the 1940s. The route is available from the Tourist Information Office at Bibliotheek Velsen.

Enjoy!
