Copenhagen has been experiencing a decrease in calls since 2013 but for 2016 passenger numbers are returning to those of 2013. About 760,000 are expected which is a “very positive sign” according to Claus Bodker, director Cruise Copenhagen Network.

In 2015, 301 transit calls are scheduled, 283 to Copenhagen and 18 to Malmo. Turnarounds will number 131 with Copenhagen receiving 124 and Malmo seven. Thirty-three cruise brands will bring 67 different ships to the port, of which 11 will visit Copenhagen for the first time including Viking Star and Mein Schiff 4. On June 6 there will be six calls bringing 24,000 passengers and 7,000 crew to the Danish capital.

Germans make up 24% of passengers visiting followed by North Americans at 22% and British at 13%. Of the crew members 29% are from the Philippines, 13% India and 12% Indonesia.

To encourage out of season calls CMP is offering a 50% discount on ship dues at both Copenhagen and Malmo. During the high season however the port is extremely busy and Arnt Moller Pedersen, chief operations officer CMP, said: “We are considering building a fourth terminal in the next three to four years. The containers will be moved from where they are now in the next eight to 10 years. The building mass from constructing the metro will go to Freeport in 2019. We will also need a new road.”

In the Cruise Copenhagen Network’s Passenger Survey 2014 released in March 86% of passengers were very satisfied with their visit to Copenhagen with 78% saying the visit was better than expected. The survey by GP Wild (International) confirmed that 72% of passengers were over the age of 50 and 69% were visiting Copenhagen for the first time.

Of the transit passengers, 53% spent two to four hours ashore and 37% four to eight hours. The average expenditure per passenger was DKK549 (E74). The average expenditure for turnaround passengers, 94% of whom stayed in hotels, was DKK2,994 (E401) per passenger.

Tivoli Gardens was the most popular sight followed closely by the Canal Tours, Amalienborg Palace and Museum, Christiansborg Palace and Rosenborg Castle.
