Cherbourg : Call of the Queen Elizabeth on the 30th of October 2010

Submitted by Cherbourg on 18 November 2010 - 4:05pm

Following her maiden World Voyage Queen Elizabeth, the newest liner owned by cruise line Cunard will be visiting Cherbourg for the first time ever. she will be embarking on four unique voyages in which she makes a maiden visit to a new region. The Queen Elizabeth venue is the last call for the season, which brings for Cherbourg passenger numbers to about 31600 and calls to 21.

Queen Elizabeth, inaugurated in Southampton at the beginning of October 2010, will succeed Queen Elizabeth 2.

The future call of Queen Elizabeth on November 30th in Cherbourg on her route for her Europe Small Tour is a 6 days cruise which will begin on the 26th of November  and last until the 1st of December, leaving from Southampton, continuing to Amsterdam, Zeebrugge, and  Cherbourg, before returning to Southampton, her homeport. This call will be a major national event welcomed in Cherbourg by the famous Celtic music band the Bagad de Lann Bihoué, Medias in number and a mass celebrated by Mgr Lalanne, Bishop of Coutances.

Horse-drawn carriages will allow all cruise ship passengers to discover the old town of Cherbourg, and guided bus tours will be organized to visit surrounding areas since the Cherbourg-Normandy Peninsula hosts three Unesco World Heritage sites: The Mont Saint Michel, the famous Bayeux Tapestry relating the Normand conquest to England, and the tower of Vauban located in the Val de Saire.

In 2006, works covered the entire renovation of the building of the Cherbourg transatlantic Terminal; including the new cruise terminal. Cruise passengers still walk through the rooms that so many stars have seen in the 1960’s. They feel also the atmosphere of the great migrations with pictures, photos, films dating back to the 30s of the 50s and showing the life of the emigrants to Cherbourg and to Ellis Island / New York.

The normal cruise berth is on the quay de France equipped 2 elevators with a capacity 16 persons each, metal detector gantry,  luggage room, custom and police desks, companies’ desks and tourist information point. There are no maximum limits ship dimension and draught in Cherbourg Port. Shuttle buses are provided for both passenger and crew to discover the city center.
