On May 13 Akureyri was the first port to kick off the 2017 Iceland cruise season. Celebrity Eclipse was the first to call during the company’s President’s Cruise with Celebrity Cruises’ Lisa Lutoff-Perlo on board.

She was the first passenger to make a donation to the port’s tree-planting programme (pictured). The programme is designed to offset carbon emissions from visiting cruiseships and passengers. To contribute to the fulfilment of the Paris Agreement, the port has signed an agreement with Eyjarfjordur Forestry Association to plant 2,000 trees locally every cruise season beginning this year.

Passengers can also contribute directly to the cause by donating €2.00 and have a tree planted by the association in their name. Iceland has a reputation for being an environmentally conscious country; with about 85% of total primary energy supply being derived from domestically produced renewable energy sources - the world’s highest share of renewable energy in any national energy budget.
