This year works are being carried out on the maritime station at Bilbao’s second cruise pier located in Getxo. The building will be 15m high and cover an area of 3,200m2. It has been conceived as a great rectangular glass container, light in form and with lots of brightness under a light zinc protective roof.

To cater for the embarking and disembarking needs of passengers, the building has been designed bearing in mind the differentiation between passenger and luggage flows. Passengers will access the terminal and/or the vessel directly, comfortably and safely, without having to walk along the pier, by way of a finger or movable gangway.

In 2015 Bilbao welcomed a number of newbuildings with Royal Caribbean International’s Anthem of the Seas being one of them. The 348m long vessel with a capacity for 4,200 docked in Bilbao on her maiden journey.

Others to call the northern Spanish port included P&O Cruise’s 330m-long Britannia: 317m Celebrity Eclipse; and 311m Explorer of the Seas.

Two shipowners made their first calls - AIDA Cruises and Grand Circle Cruise Line. In all, 43 cruise vessels called, nine being first timers.
