Astoria kicks off a record 2017 season for Rouen

Cruise and Maritime Voyages’ (CMV) Astoria was the first arrival of the year in Rouen on March 27. She begins a record season of 27 calls.

Rouen has been successful not only at increasing the numbers of cruiseship visits, but also extending its cruise season, which last year culminated in a special New Year voyage of Brittany Ferries’ flagship Pont Aven. Both Fred Olsen Cruise Lines and CMV will be visiting next December to take advantage of Rouen’s growing Christmas Market, held annually next to Rouen Cathedral.

Astoria called when Rouen was hosting the largest international trade fair for French tourism, Rendezvous en France. Nine hundred international tour operators met for two days of appointments with a choice of 650 French tourism professionals. The Captain and senior officers were special guests at the event party held at Rouen’s XXL Panorama, home of one of the largest paintings in the world.

Rouen is fairly unique in the industry in that almost every cruiseship call entails an overnight stay. At present visits are mainly from European lines, however next year there will be a great number of US lines calling in with numbers expected to exceed this year’s.
