Alta is extending one of its three berths from 169m to 269m. The work will begin in 2011 and be completed by 2013 says Arnt Trygve Nilsen, port captain Alta Havn.
This year the Norwegian port is expecting six calls and 3,500 passengers with nine calls already booked for 2011.
Two of the three quays are dedicated to cruiseships with the maximum size of vessel able to come alongside being 289.5m. Draught restriction is 10m. Wastewater and recycling facilities are available at the pier.
About 3,000 passengers can be handled at one time although there is no passenger terminal. It is about 30 minutes by bus to the city centre.
Alta is 119nm from Tromso and 43nm from Hammerfest.
