Submitted by CE-Press on 26 January 2011 - 9:32am

Calls to Alesund in 2011 are significantly up on last year, being 97 calls compared with 74. Passenger numbers too are on a steep increase, set to reach 110,000 this year compared to 76,709 in 2010.

Since 2002, the port has seen a massive increase in numbers. Back then it received 35 calls and 22,386 passengers.

This year there will be 16 maiden calls as well as many from ships that have called before. Those visiting include Cunard Line’s Queen Victoria, Silversea Cruises’ Silver Whisper, Holland America Line;s Prinsendam, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines’ Boudicca and TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 2.

The port can accommodate cruiseships of all sizes at the cruise terminal which is located in the centre of the Art Nouveau town.

A 200m expansion of the cruise pier at Alesund is scheduled for completion in 2012. It will increase the quay front from 370m to 570m.
