Akureyri plants trees to offset cruiseship carbon emissions

About 85% of total primary energy supply in Iceland is derived from domestically produced renewable energy sources. This is the world’s highest share of renewable energy in any national total energy budget.

Starting this summer 2017, Akureyri will contribute directly to the country’s environmentally conscious efforts with a tree-planting programme designed to offset carbon emissions from visiting cruiseships. The port has signed an agreement with the Eyjarfjordur Forestry Association to plant 2,000 trees locally for every cruise season. Passengers can also contribute directly to the cause by donating €2 and having a tree planted by the Forestry Association in their name.
