The Port of Akureyri has not forgotten its promise to accommodate smaller vessels closer to the town centre and is investing €5m in constructing a new pier which will open for business in 2019.

With a length of 130m and depth of 9m, it will be able to accommodate vessels under 10,000gt. Equipped with WiFi, it will be just 100m from the town centre.

Akureyri is looking forward to yet another bumper summer season, with increases in both tonnage and the number of cruiseships visiting the North Iceland port.

Calls have increased from 124 to 138 year on year, and passenger numbers are also set to rise by 10% in 2018, bringing the number of passengers to 130,000.

A highlight of the 2018 calendar is the arrival of 170,000gt MSC Meraviglia, which will set the record as the biggest ship to call to date.

“The town and port area have experienced a busy winter season so far thanks to a new series of UK-based charter flights from Super Break. Due to the initiative’s resounding success, the venture will repeat in 2019,” commented Petur Olafsson from the port.
