Guides from Venezuela, Brazil, Italy and Russia went through a 150-hour winter guide training programme in Aarhus, beginning work on Princess Cruises’ Emerald Princess when she visited on May 22. “Guides are an important part of a successful cruise call anywhere and it has been exciting to see how these girls have worked and learned and how they act and function now that they are trained guides,” says Nicolai Koyer, chief commercial officer at the Port of Aarhus.
The need for multi-language guides is increasing as more and more international visitors visit different ports around the world. When these guides started the course in October 2010, two of the girls had been in Denmark only 11 months, one for two years and another for a few years.
All the training is given in Danish with subjects including Danish social conditions, history and history of art. Kroyer says: “The training has also given them a solid knowledge about their new country and strengthened them in their effort to become integrated into Danish society.”
There are now 35 guides in Aarhus all speaking English and Danish. However 26 of them speak additional languages including French, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian.
