Scottish Highlands: One Of The World's Top 20 To Visit In 2011

Where Altitude Affects Attitude: Cuillin Hills, Skye

The Scottish Highlands, including Britain’s largest National Park, have been included in National Geographic Traveller magazine’s list of the top 20 places to visit in 2011.

The magazine’s senior editor, Norie Quintos, visited the Cairngorms last October when she was attending the Adventure Travel World Summit held in Aviemore.

In an article for National Geographic Traveller, Quintos references the “fierce Bronze Age warriors, Vikings and Gaelic speaking clans who have all called the rugged Highlands home.” She goes on to enthuse about “the primeval landscape . . .which attracts outdoor enthusiasts drawn to the mist-shrouded mountains, shimmering lochs, sheer cliffs and sandy beaches.”

Cruise Scotland’s Market Development Manager, Gordon Ireland, observed: “We’ve always been quietly confident that Scotland is a world class destination, and it’s great to have that confirmed by such an esteemed publication. Cruise ship visitors arriving at ports such as Invergordon, Portree, Scrabster, Ullapool and Fort William can experience for themselves the rugged beauty of Scotland’s Highlands."
