Cherbourg Cruise Call: One Perfect Day In Port

Submitted by Ralph Grizzle on 7 May 2010 - 11:07pm

How do you spend a perfect day when your ship arrives in Cherbourg, France? Guillaume Hamel, cruise director of Cherbourg Cruise Destination, offers a few recommendations.

Begin by disembarking the ship at the historic Cherbourg Cruise Terminal, which was one of Europe's most important transatlantic ports at the beginning of the 20th century. The attractive terminal has retained its original Art Deco features.

In the terminal, cruise passengers are invited to a free tasting of delicacies from the Normandy region.

Afterward, either head to the city center by motorcoach or by horse and carriage — or join a longer excursion to see one or more of the three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the iconic Mont Saint Michel; the Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts the Norman Conquest; and the Towers of Vauban, architectural military wonders from the 17th century situated in the Val de Saire.

You could also visit the D-Day landing beaches where the Battle of Normandy took place.

The Cherbourg region is home to artistic and historical figures such as Alexis de Tocqueville (Democracy in America), Jean- François Millet, the Impressionist who inspired Van Gogh, Jacques Prévert the poet and Christian Dior.
